What is it? The NetBioMed satellite is part of the NetSci onference 2023 in Vienna [https://netsci2023.wixsite.com/netsci2023] and will take place in the morning of July 10.
NetBioMed is dedicated to network science in biology and medicine. It was installed in 2020, when the two long-running satellites NetMed and NetSciReg were combined into a single, integrated satellite.
What is it about? From molecules to cells, organs and entire organisms, virtually all processes in health and disease rely on the careful orchestration of a myriad of components. Tools and concepts from network science have made key contributions to our understanding of this complex interplay. In 2023, NetBioMed will focus on moving beyond individual cellular or tissue levels towards a more holistic understanding of the whole organism. While modern technologies allow us to profile healthy and disease states at molecular resolution, integrating the diverse data across different levels of biological organization remains a challenge. Network science provides exciting opportunities to address this challenge.
The topics we are targeting at the satellite include, but are not limited to:
- network-models for cross-scale integration of biomedical data
- the interplay between molecular, cellular and phenotypic networks
- methods to consider the spatial context of cellular interactions
- disease trajectory networks
Biomedical applications include:
- network approaches in pain research
- whole body mapping of interorgan communication
- network-based drug repurposing
- the impact of food and other exposures on human health
The meeting is targeted to network scientists whose research focuses on biomedical applications as well as biomedical scientists who are interested in learning about how network approaches can be used to study biological or disease systems at the molecular, cellular, or population level.
